Gunmen of the Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) killed 18 people (including 4 Europeans) and left 33 wounded during a targeted ambush on the beach resort of Grand Bassam on last Sunday.
Six terrorists dressed in black were walking along the beach promenade when they opened fire at people sitting in the bars and restaurants. The local security forces arrived promptly, returning the fire and consequently killing all six gunmen. The resort was later evacuated.
It was confirmed on Monday by the Goethe Institute that the director of the German language institute in Abijan, Henrike Grohs, was among the people killed by the Al Qaeda attackers.
The country itself faces now its ‚first‘ terror attack, which may have come as a surprise at first but was the likely consequence of the Ivorian diplomatic activity in the Malian crisis.
