10. August 2015

Malaysian Officials reported the disappearance and probable hijack of Singapore flagged Tanker MT Joaquim while its transit from Tanjung Pinang to Pulau Langkawi. The vessel disappeared from radar at 09:35pm from the radar and was found twelve hours later by a MPA.

According to Malaysian officials fuel oil worth USD 700.000 was stolen from the tanker, which may have been transferred to a so called „phantom vessel“. Although the majority of crimes against the shipping industry is in the Malaccas Straits are based on simple „hit-and-run“ tactics, such use „phantom vessels“ is quite common in the region.
